June Jobs Report and Food Franchising

screen-shot-2013-07-05-at-10-13-17-am

Help wanted signs have appeared with greater frequency in the windows of cafés and restaurants over the past year. In June, restaurants fueled a 27,910 rise in jobs for the franchise industry.

Currently, 75 percent of private sector jobs added in June were from restaurants, according to a national franchise report. June’s job number exceeded those in May by 19,160.

For the nation, the total number of jobs added to the workforce, 195,000, exceeded the estimate of 155,000. It looks as though businesses in general are hiring.

While higher job numbers provide some with a glimmer of hope, the unemployment rate currently remains steady at 7.6 percent. Equally frustrating is the quality of the jobs being added to the workforce. As the national franchise report showed, Americans are being hired for hourly work and paid typically low wages. Hospitality and leisure jobs rose by 75,000 in June, and some of those are probably summer jobs for college and high school kids.

Also in June, the number of part-time workers — specifically those who are working part-time because full-time unemployment remains unavailable to them– reached 8.2 million, a level not seen since October of last year.

The franchise industry and its food franchising sector is not unfamiliar with a part-time workforce.

The takeaway? The increase in part-time, low-wage jobs is good news when we consider that there could be no jobs at all. It’s also bad news, in that many college grads are now entering part-time employment. Prior to the recession, those numbers were much lower.

Restaurant Franchises Saved from Soda Ban by New York Judge

Restaurant franchises in New York City are heaving a collective sigh of relief as Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s plan to outlaw sugary sodas in the Big Apple was canned by a state judge.

The proposed ban, introduced last year by Mr. Bloomberg, would have prevented the sale of sodas and other sugary beverages over 16 ounces in restaurants, restaurant franchises, and cafeterias. Some fruit juice and dairy based drinks were also on the list of banned beverages not to be sold if over 16 ounces.

While Mayor Michael Bloomberg hoped the ban would encourage a decrease in New York City’s obesity percentage– which is currently 50 percent.

Judge Milton Tingling of the New York Supreme Court called the soda ban, “arbitrary and capricious” citing it had too many loopholes to be effective. For example, restaurant franchises like 7-Eleven were exempt from the ban as were some sugar-laden drinks over 16 oz containing 50 percent or more milk.

Though the ban on soda has fizzled out for the moment many nutritionists hope Mayor Bloomberg will try again. The Bloomberg administration released a statement that it plans to appeal the judge’s decision.

Restaurant Franchises and Pro-Athletes

restaurant franchises

Imagine walking into one of your favorite restaurant or food franchises and seeing a famous athlete in line making the sandwiches. For patrons of the Fourth Street Jimmy Johns in Waco, Texas that’s been normal this summer.

Rams running back Terrance Ganaway makes Jimmy Johns sandwiches as fast as he can for 12 hours,  three days a week.

Wanting to stay out of trouble during the off season, Ganaway jokingly tweeted, “Anyone hiring?”

A Jimmy Johns employee replied: “We’re hiring.”

Ganaway isn’t the first professional athlete to have attached himself to a restaurant franchise, though it needs to be said Terrance isn’t a paid spokesperson for Jimmy Johns.

  • Jamba Juice recently signed a deal with tennis pro Venus Williams to open five stores in Washington, D.C.
  • A group of NFL players, which includes ReggieBush and Keyshawn Johnson, has opened Panera Bread franchises in California.
  • Junior Bridgeman has created a restaurant franchise empire that includes 121 Chili’s restaurants and 162 Wendy’s.
  • Angelo Crowell, a linebacker in the NFL, opened two Jersey Mike’s franchises in Tallahassee, Fla.

And who can forget Peyton Manning’s lucrative relationship with Papa John’s Pizza? (After completing a three-year sponsorship agreement with the NFL, Papa John’s announced Wednesday that it has reached a new long-term agreement with the league.)

Top 4 Restaurant Franchises

The United States has maintained its status as the leader in franchising since the 1930s, when restaurants and other establishments used franchising as a means of expansion during the Great Depression. Great spherification ideas: salad dressing, maraschino cherry juice or olives for cocktails

Culinary foams are surprisingly common; meringues, whipped cream and mousse are all foams. As such, even the franchising giant McDonald’s can pat itself on the back for using an advanced cooking technique.

Wendy’s to Use More Humane Animal Treatment Practices

Wendy’s, which has just ousted Burger King as the number two burger chain in the country, has announced that they are now using more humane animal treatment practices. Their major chicken supplier, OK Foods, has begun using a system called LAPS, which renders the chickens unconscious before being processed by the workers. The industry standard prior to this was killing the chickens by electroshock.

Wendy’s is also encouraging other chains to follow suit, especially with the elimination of pork gestation stalls (which are very tiny and render the animal practically immobile), which McDonalds said it would phase out last month. PETA calls these moves “encouraging.” With all this good press, it might be time to start your own restaurant franchise like Wendy’s.
